New Blog

In my ever-so-abundant free time, I've been working on a new blog. Eventually it will replace this one. Basically it's the same blog content with a fancy new design and a new back-end written entirely by me.

Take a look and let me know what you think. Comments/suggestions/bug reports would be much appreciated. Is the Hitchhiker's homage cool or just stupid? Should it be more subtle? Don't be shy, I want to know! Just keep in mind that I'm not finished, and it will be changing frequently without notice.

I've been really getting into CSS web design, so I'm using the new blog to experiment with some of the things I'm learning. For example, the pages are built almost entirely without tables. It's all div tags and CSS. It's really cool (AKA Geeky) stuff!

Demotivation

Why is it that nearly every time I catch the fitness bug, I end up sick or injured right when I'm getting into it? I had been running 3 or 4 mornings a week for a couple months, my wife was just starting to go running with me, and I was starting on an indoor soccer league a couple weeks ago when I pulled my quad. Right when I was getting past that "wall" where it starts getting a little easier to exercise.

I had completely no energy for my first game, so I was doing some sprints to build up my endurance, and that's when I pulled it. I did the whole R.I.C.E. thing, and I felt pretty good before the game. Well, I was wrong. A minute into the game, I kicked the ball across the field and I felt a rip in my right quad. The "funny" part is that 3 other people on my team pulled the exact same muscle in that same week. That'll make things interesting.

I'm getting tired of things getting in the way of my tiny bit of motivation to exercise. It happens every time. I find the motivation to get started, I get into it, I get sick/get injured/have to work extra hours at work, and then lose my motivation by the time I'm finally recuperated enough to start exercising again. Hopefully the $75 I paid for the soccer league will be motivation enough to get back into it when I'm healed.

I just hope I can get healed before the season's over.

Bah!

New Switchfoot Album

The Christian rock band, Switchfoot, is just finishing up on their next album, and it should be released on September 13th! Here's what bass player Tim Forman says about the album...

We feel like proud parents, and we can't wait to introduce you to our newest creation. I'm not sure if it's a boy or a girl, but it definitely has teeth.

It sounds like this next album will rock even more than their last one. Hopefully that means that we'll hear more songs like "Meant To Live". That'd be sweet!

The intro page on the Switchfoot site has a clip that sounds very promising.

MilBlogger Wounded

Please pray for TCOverride (Chuck) and his family. He was recently wounded by an IED in Iraq. He's in stable condition, and he'll live through it mostly in one peace, but I'm sure that he and his family could use the prayers about now.

Update 06.23.2005
Another update on Chuck's status.

Too Much Free Time

It's things like this that really make me wish I was back working at a real software company. I miss the laid-back fun environment I had at KnowledgePoint. I really miss wearing shorts and a t-shirt to work.

Father of The Year

Here's a little news from my neck of the woods.

Marcus Wesson was found guilty of all 9 counts of the first degree murder of 9 of his kids and 14 counts of sexual assault.

The jurors decided after 10 days (50 hours) to convict him "Charlie Manson style." Apparently in California a jury is allowed to convict someone of murder even if the defendant may not have been the one that actually pulled the trigger. They only have to prove that he/she could have ordered the murder. That's the last time I tell someone to go jump off a bridge.

Now comes the sentencing phase, which could be just as long as the trial itself, especially since the death penalty is a possibility.

Update 06.30.2005
Wesson sentenced to death.

Are You Kidding Me?

What in the world is wrong with this guy?

Apparently Senator Dick Durban had some rather "interesting" things to say about the treatment of the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. He talked about what an FBI agent had seen at Gitmo, and then went on to compare it to some of the worst examples of torture and murder in human history.

In remarks on the Senate floor late Tuesday, Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, read the report of an FBI agent who described treatment of prisoners at Gitmo, including one detainee being held in such cold temperatures that he shivered, another who was held in heat passing 100 degrees and one who was chained to the floor and forced to listen to loud rap music.

So cold that he shivered?! Oh no! Over 100 degrees?! How cruel! Rap music?!?! Ok, I kind of agree that rap music is cruel and unusual, but the rest of the complaints are just crap. I'm forced to live in 100 degree weather for most of the summer here in the Central Valley, and in the winter, it's easily cold enough to make me "shiver". Who cares if they have to endure a couple days! How about if we start sawing of the heads of these guys? Then Durbin might understand how easy these prisoners have it. These terrorist don't know anything but fear. They don't understand respectful reasoning and logic. They speak, eat, sleep, and work on fear. So, unfortunately, we have to talk in their language.

If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings

How can he even begin to compare Gitmo to these completely evil people and their murderous regimes? Each of them, killed hundreds of thousands, if not millions of innocent civilians, including women and children. If anything, this Durbin guy has it completely backwards. He should be comparing the terrorists to the Nazis, and comparing Americans to the innocent civilians that were killed, tortured, and mutilated.

The American soldiers at Gitmo are doing everything they can to treat the prisoners as humanely as possible while trying to maintain the fact that this is a prison camp with dangerous enemy combatants that were picked up on the battlefield. In some cases they're being treated even better than our own troops in Iraq are. The prisoners are definitely being fed better food.

This administration should apologize to the American people for abandoning the Geneva Conventions and authorizing torture techniques that put our troops at risk and make Americans less secure

The Geneva Convention does not apply here. It specifically applies only to the countries that have signed it, and as far as I know Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and the rest have never signed it. It does not apply. It sounds like Sen. Durban needs to do a little homework before talking opening his mouth.

Most of these people are extremely dangerous people that wouldn't even think twice about killing any American including women and young children if they had the chance. It's a matter of national security that we keep these people detained and use any means necessary to determine what should be done with them.

Meanwhile, irresponsible comments by clowns like Durbin can do nothing but lower the moral of our brave men and women fighting for freedom around the world, and flame the fires that are driving the terrorists to kill Americans nearly every day.

Someone really needs to get a leash on guys like Durbin.

Update 6.17.2005:
There's another great reaction at BlackFive.net.

Update 6.20.2005:
The Indepundit has another reaction, this time from a former POW that knows what torture is really like. He also has a list of links to even more reactions.

Update 6.22.2005:
Chuck has his own great responses to Dick's comments and his past record of "supporting" our troops.

Code Snippet: Client Message Box

Here's an extremely simple bit of VB.Net code that I've been using a lot lately for displaying a client-side message box on an Asp.Net page...

Private Sub MessageBox(ByVal strBoxName As String, ByVal strMessage As String)
    Dim strScript As String

    strMessage = strMessage.Replace("'", "\'")
    strMessage = strMessage.Replace(""", "\""")
    strMessage = strMessage.Replace(vbCrLf, "\n")
    strScript = "<script language='javascript'>alert('" & strMessage & "');</script>"

    Page.RegisterStartupScript(strBoxName, strScript)
End Sub

You can find a pretty good article about about using javascript to enhance your Asp.Net pages here.

Homebrewed AC

I really wish I knew about this back in college. I totally would have built one of these in my dorm room.
